Citing data from Yelp, NewYorkUpstate has released its latest report of the municipalities that feature the best bbq north of Westchester and Rockland counties.

According to the report, factors that determine ranking include number of reviews, star ranking and number of negative reviews.”Best" is measured using an algorithm that looks at the number of reviews, star rating for a business, length of time a business has been opened, and other factors.

The number of negative (one or two-star) reviews are also a significant factor, and may give a restaurant with fewer total reviews a higher ranking than a restaurant with the same star rating and a higher number of reviews.

According to the report, these Hudson Valley eateries made the Top 10.

  • Papa’s Best Batch (fourth overall) on Pitcher Lane in Red Hook.

“Wow, the best meal we had in the Hudson Valley! And a totally serendipitous one after stopping by Grieg Farm and noticing a little Airstream, picnic tables, and a giant Smokehouse sign,” one Yelp reviewer wrote. “The shining star here is undoubtedly the smoked salmon. Fresh out of the smoker today, the salmon was perfectly and ever so slightly glazed on top and its inside had the most incredible rich smokey taste. The texture was divine- ever so slightly crisp on the top and moist inside. SO good.

  • Big W’s Roadside Barbecue (fifth) on Route 22 in Wingdale.

According to their website, “Big W's meats are of the highest quality pork, beef and chicken. They are rubbed down with dry spices and brown sugar and then slow smoked for up to 20 hours in a traditional tank smoker daily. (Just ask and we'll be happy to show them off to you).”

  • Round Up TX BBQ (sixth) on Route 9 in Cold Spring.

"Route 9 seems an unlikely location for Texas-style dry-rubbed, hickory-smoked brisket (marbled or lean), sausage (spicy or mild) and ribs so tender the meat barely clings to the bone, but Round Up Texas BBQ is the real deal,” the New York Times wrote in a testimonial.
